" This is a recorded presentation of a workshop on the basics of news literacy created as part of a series on Citizen Literacy. This workshop covers the origins of the news, the process by which news gets made, the difference between reporting and editorializing and the phenomenon of infotainment."
In this section of the Citizen Literacy Workshop Series we discussed the news, what it is, how it gets made, the difference between reporting and editorializing, and the phenomenon of infotainment, and how it has led to a lot of the current messes in our country.

In this session of our Citizen Literacy Workshop Series we will be discussing expertise and authority, who has it? How do they get it?

Sam Wineburg and Michael Caulfield write:
“Recent headlines warn of sophisticated, AI-driven deepfakes.
But low-tech, cheap fakes are the Swiss army knife in the propagandist’s tool belt.
Changing a date, altering a location or even repurposing a clip from a video game and passing it off as battlefield combat require little know-how yet effectively sow confusion.
The good news is that you can avoid being taken in by these ruses—not by examining the evidence closely, which is liable to mislead you, but by waiting until trusted sources verify what you’re looking at. This is often hard to do, however.”...

(From the Washington State OER Commons)
"Students examine what deepfakes are and consider the deeper civic and ethical implications of deepfake technology. In an age of easy image manipulation, this lesson fosters critical thinking skills that empower students to question how we can mitigate the impact of doctored media content. This lesson plan includes a slide deck and brainstorm sheet for classroom use." (from the Washington State OER Collection)

News deserts
“A fifth of the country’s population—70 million people—now live in an area with no local news organizations, or one at risk, with only one local news outlet and very limited access to critical news and information. The United States continues to lose newspapers at a rate of two per week. . . . About 7 percent of the nation’s counties, or 211, now have no local newspaper.”

"This handbook introduces journalists to the skills necessary to survive and thrive in the digital environment. The content is practical, not conceptual, and readers will be able to perform skills the same day they read about them. The handbook is organized to focus on on discipline at a time, and guides users along the way, breaking down each skill and technology into digestible lessons that will be immediately usable."

Curious about Clubhouse and other social media platforms? Figuring out how to make a proper FOIA request?
Snooping for search engine optimization tips? Look no further than Journalist's Toolbox.
Launched by journalism professor Mike Reilley in 1996, and since a project of the Society of Professional Journalists, the site serves as an information hub for those in the field. Reilley continues to update the site (sometimes weekly, sometimes daily) and it is now home to more than 150 pages and thousands of tools available under a Creative Commons license.
For example, the home page highlights a COVID-19 reporting collection. Here, journalists covering the pandemic will find more than 500 useful resources, ranging from safety protocols to statistics. Other resources are cataloged topically in the left-hand column.
To keep up with the latest additions to the site, click "What's New" in the top-right corner, sign up for the newsletter, or subscribe to the YouTube channel (links to do so are found on the home page).
Readers can also keep up with Reilley and the Toolbox on Twitter, @journtoolbox.
